Remember “firsts” as a family; then plan your summer vacation.

Honey Harbour, Ontario - Most of us remember our childhood “firsts” - typically fun times associated with summer holidays. Most of us recall vividly when the training wheels came off and we glided, unassisted, on two wheels with our parents cheering in the background. We remember with fondness when we sat on the dock by the bay, landing our first sun fish or small-mouth bass, as mom or dad smiled as we reeled it in, squeamish about removing the hook from the flopping creature.

Do you remember cupping a frog in your hands, opening your fingers just enough to catch a peek at your new friend? Then, your hands flew apart and you set him free, watching him leap away. There’s nothing like roasting marshmallows over an open campfire - at any age, at any time! For the water-lovers, you’ll likely recollect your first attempt at water skiing or bouncing off the water trampoline, landing head-first into the drink. How about helping to moor the boat, skip stones or fly a kite?

As families gather together and spend some quality time during the March Break, it’s time to reflect on those cherished summertime memories, and plan for some new ones for 2012. The summer of 2011 was one of the hottest and driest on record and with spring just around the corner; let’s hope the summer of 2012 is another memorable one.

For parents with young children, perhaps you’re still anxiously awaiting some of those “firsts,” or you plan to take your kids to the exact spot where they occurred. There are favorite places, that not only lend themselves to making memories, but help us rekindle those deep inside. Sound familiar?
There’s a place close to my heart, where I watched my children grow and virtually “learn to walk.” My oldest daughter dipped her toes in a natural body of water - Georgian Bay - in a sort of Muskoka baptism. It set the stage for more than 10 years of enjoying pristine waters. My son learned to swim in that very pool, where bingo, music and social times reign supreme. I can see his smiling face; his feeling of accomplishment, in my mind, like it was yesterday. The duo got hooked on the banana boat, massive twists, turns and spectacular splashes. My youngest saw her first water snake, toasted marshmallows and chased tennis balls around the court during a family tennis match - the first of many. First day camps, counselors, rock climbing and kayaking. The list of “firsts” is seemingly endless, just like a decade of family traditions. Priceless. This place is the Delawana Inn Resort in Muskoka. Hopefully, as they grow and mature, my children will remember all of those Delawana firsts, and continue the tradition.
