January 5, 1616
Champlain set out to visit
the Tobacco Nation living in an area between
Lake Simcoe and Nottawasaga Bay. The Nottawasaga river is considered
one of the 5 gateways to Huronia ending up in Georgian
Bay. The Huron
cultivated large fields of Tobacco and traded this commodity.
The word Nottawasaga, means
"the mouth of the Mohawk River" in Huron
and Ojibway.

Four hundred years ago, Samuel De Champlain,
landed in what is now New Brunswick. Eleven years later he explored
in the Georgian Bay Area
and befriended the Huron Nation. In the fall of 1615, he
assisted with a war party that traveled from Georgian
Bay to what is now New York state, to seek revenge on the Iroquois
Nation. On this day December 23, 1615 Champlain returned
wounded to Huronia and the village of Cahiaque.
