Georgian Bay-Ontario’s Sixth Great Lake
Click here for Southern Georgian Bay Weather and Marine report One of Ontario’s first informally designated tourism destinations--this part of Georgian Bay began attracting tourists when the Victoria House-Cottage Hotel was first built in 1897 by the Nickerson Family from Midland and Victoria Harbour, just west of the Delawana. The Nickerson family members were entrepreneurs and saw the potential of a tourism destination, complete with natural beaches, fishing, and recreation. (see Delawana History) The only access was by boat and for a mere fifteen cents, you could take the steamer “Odessa” from Victoria Harbour, before reaching Honey Harbour and the Victoria House. Although the Honey Harbour area represents only a part of Georgian Bay, today it is a tourism gateway to exceptional water-sports of sailing, boating and fishing in Ontario’s 6th Great Lake. Delawana offers all of the boating possibilities including a safari tour through the 30,000 islands by personal watercraft. Use of canoes, paddleboat's, and kayaks are also available to experience a more leisurely pace around the islands and inlets of Georgian Bay. There are a number of important features of Georgian Bay: *Access to the Trent-Severn Waterway and all of Ontario’s Great Lakes *The UNESCO* designation with two Biosphere Reserves, the Niagara Escarpment and South Eastern Georgian Bay *Exceptional fresh water beaches including the world’s largest
