Day Programs (June 25 –
Sept 2, 2007)
Wetland Explorers – Monday,
10:00am-12:00pm
Explore amazing wetlands, one of the most productive types of habitats
in North America. Join a Wye Marsh Naturalist and get down and dirty
while dipnetting in a pond on Royal Island for its underwater creatures.
We will help you identify the animals and insects that you catch
and teach you about how they survive. To further investigate aquatic
ecosystems, we will take water samples and perform chemical tests
to help understand why these wetland areas are so important. We
will help you understand what you can do to protect wetlands and
we will always be on the lookout for toe biters!
Indian River Bugs & Insects – Monday, 1:00 –
1:45pm & 2:00-2:45pm
We use the term "bugs" very loosely. The stars of this
show are not only live insects, but also arachnids (tarantulas,
scorpions) and sometimes there are special bug "guests"
as well. These presentations have been very warmly received in classrooms,
at birthday parties, and at such venues as the Ontario Science Centre.
During the show, we introduce some of nature's most misunderstood
creatures and the audience will learn why they are special -- not
scary!
Wet N Scaly – Tuesday, 10:30
– 12:00
Join the Wye Marsh Naturalists for one of our most exciting programs.
Learn all about the reptiles and amphibians of Georgian Bay during
this hour and a half session. Come out and make friends with live
snakes, turtles, salamanders and frogs. You will learn all about
where they live, what they eat and all of their interesting and
sometimes strange characteristics. Get up close and personal with
some of the world’s most exciting creatures!
GPS Survival! – Tuesday, 1:00-3:00
The future has arrived! Geo-caching, for those of you who haven’t
heard of it, is an outdoor treasure-hunting game in which the participants
use a GPS receiver or other navigational techniques to hide and
seek containers called Geo-caches. The Wye Marsh, wants to pass
our high tech skills on to you! Global Positioning Systems allow
a connection from the palm of your hand to satellites in space to
navigate any point on our planet. Join us for a quick introduction
to the basic functions of GPS navigation including understanding
way-points, marking and entering way-points, Geo-caching, and following
directional indicators. It’s easier than you think!

Live Birds of Prey show. We will bring you some of the most incredible
LIVE birds you have ever seen! You will be amazed as our knowledgeable
Falconers entertain you with stories and legends, life histories,
predation, and countless other interesting facts. It’s when
these birds burst into flight that will really be dazzled while
they bob and weave their way through the crowd. It’s a show
you will never forget!
Going on a Rock Hunt – Thursday,
1:00-3:00
What makes Georgian Bay so beautiful is the geology! Join a Wye
Marsh naturalist for a trip through time exploring the forces that
shaped this spectacular region. We will start with rock and mineral
testing helping participants to understand systems of classification
and how rocks are differ. But to really understand geology, you
will join us on a rock hunt. As we will scour the area investigating
formations, glacier paths, different rocks, and the impacts of human
alteration to the landscape, we shall leave no stone unturned! Mother
Nature spent millions of years creating our landscapes. We will
unlock her secrets in only a couple of hours!
Tracking Furry Critters! –
Saturday, 1:00-3:00
Join a Wye Marsh naturalist for a lesson on Ontario’s furry
critters! Can you tell a Mink from an Otter? Well let’s see!
We’ll start you off with a slide show to clear up any confusion
about the mammals of Ontario. After creating plaster animal tracks
for you to keep as a souvenir, we’ll head off for a nature
hike and track down some of these critters. We will teach you some
tracking techniques that are sure to impress your friends!
